Assistant Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013-2015, young Belgian conductor Karel Deseure has made many significant guest conducting debuts in recent seasons. These have included the Flanders Symphony, The Hague Philharmonic, Ensemble Ludwig, South Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra. The 16/17 season sees return visits to the Brussels Philharmonic, Royal Liege Philharmonic, Arnhem Philharmonic and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.
In Spring 2016, Karel made a critically acclaimed opera debut at Opera Zuid in the South Netherlands with Puccini’s La Boheme. In the same season, he worked as assistant conductor with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Wagner’s Lohengrin and stepped in for Valery Gergiev during rehearsals with the Rotterdam Philharmonic.
After earning his Master’s degree with great distinction as flautist at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp in 2008, Karel studied conducting at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. In 2012, he won 2nd prize and the public’s prize at the ‘Concours International de Direction d’Orchestre’ in Paris, and later that year he was awarded the prestigious conducting scholarship of the Anton Kersjes Foundation.
Karel is privileged to have been chosen for prestigious international masterclasses: with Bernard Haitink during the 2014 Lucerne Festival; with Peter Eötvös at the IRCAM with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France; and with Christopher Seaman and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.
