Beethoven Complete Symphonies
Together with its chief-conductor Kristiina Poska the Flanders Symphony Orchestra embarks on a journey recording the complete Beethoven symphonies. Beethoven’s symphonies have been a point of reference for the orchestra over the last few decades, being a bright lighthouse at the very heart of the symphonic literature.
This first volume combines the First with the Seventh Symphony, demonstrating the spectacular range of rhetorics and emotions in Beethoven’s music. While the First Symphony still retains the lingering scent of the classical era, the Seventh is a culmination of the symphonic form originating from the dance suite, exploring all the possibilities of the early romantic orchestra and setting unprecedented musical standards for the future.
The second volume in this series brings together Beethoven's Second and Third Symphonies. Although Beethoven's Second Symphony follows the classical trajectory of his First Symphony, it marks a transition from his earlier works to a more assertive and individual style. Beethoven's Third Symphony, 'Eroica', represents a monumental shift in the symphonic genre and breaks with conventional norms. It revolutionises symphonic composition by expanding its scope, duration and expressive possibilities. In doing so, Beethoven laid the foundations for the Romantic period in music.

Beethoven, Complete Symphonies Vol. 2, Nos. 2 & 3 are released on all digital platforms on 27 September 2024.

César Franck with pianist Tanguy de Williencourt
We recently recorded two works by Belgian composer César Franck: Les Djinns and Variations Symphoniques. We did this with the brilliant French pianist Tanguy de Williencourt for the Mirare label.

"Franck described his little-known “Les Djinns” as a symphonic poem, though many would argue its demanding piano makes it is a one-movement piano concerto. Williencourt’s highly dramatic playing suggest he views the piano as the protagonist; his playing fully conveys the story’s horror and angst."
