Together with chief conductor Kristiina Poska, Flanders Symphony Orchestra is releasing the complete symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven on CD. For some time now, the symphonies of this great master have been a point of reference for the orchestra, a shining beacon at the heart of the symphonic literature.

The second volume in this series brings together Beethoven's Second and Third Symphonies. Although Beethoven's Second Symphony follows the classical trajectory of his First Symphony, it marks a transition from his earlier works to a more assertive and individual style. You can hear his pride and personal struggle against his encroaching deafness. 

Beethoven's Third Symphony, 'Eroica', represents a monumental shift in the symphonic genre and breaks with conventional norms. It revolutionises symphonic composition by expanding its scope, duration and expressive possibilities. In doing so, Beethoven laid the foundations for the Romantic period in music.
